Hoops playoffs underway
The Junior Pacers pulled off an upset to highlight the beginning of
the postseason playoffs for the spring 2003 girls’ basketball league
at the Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach.
Senior Division
The regular season champion Celtics, who went 8-2, are the
favorite for the title.
Mya Olivier of the Celtics won the division scoring title while
the Hornets’ Lauren Kelly was the top rebounder and Emily LaRose the
assist leader during the regular season.
Junior Division
Coach Bill Strickland’s Spurs won the regular season title with a
5-1 record and enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed.
The division’s regular season scoring champion was Emily Writer,
the Rockets’ Amy Congelton led the division in rebounding and the
Spurs’ Natasha Strickland was the assists leader.
In a first-round playoff upset, the Junior Pacers, who went 0-6
during the regular season, upended the Bulls in overtime.
The Pacers, behind the play of Marianna Acevedo, Rhya Harris, Alex
Kempler, Kelsey Peterson, Alison Romano and Parker Yamaski, overcame
a 10-point, fourth quarter deficit, to defeat the third-place
Rockets.
