Whale launch will kick off summer at Dunes
Twenty-six fifth-graders from Mariners Elementary School in
Newport Beach will head to the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort on
Friday for the 46th annual Whale Launch.
Kicking off the summer season, the students will send the 20-foot
fiberglass whale into the water. After the whale launch, the students
will participate in a series of interactive ecological presentations
and demonstrations about the effects of water runoff in Orange
County.
The students launch “Moe B. Dunes,” the resort’s mascot whale, at
10:30 a.m. Friday. Performing Arts Center will tango in July
It is dramatic. It has flare and it will be at the Orange County
Performing Arts Center.
The center will present the world-renowned Romulo Larrea Tango
Ensemble performing “Tangos -- for La Milonga” in July, officials
announced this week.
La Milonga is a tango rhythm, as well as the name given to the
place where tango aficionados gather, Center officials said. For this
performance, that place will be Founders Hall.
The ensemble, founded by Larrea in 1990, includes musicians,
singers and dancers who perform with authenticity. Their hallmark is
“technical mastery combined with extraordinary artistry.”
Performances are scheduled for 8 p.m. July 17 and 18 and 2 and 8
p.m. July 19. Seats for the matinee show cost $46, and evening shows
cost $49. Tickets go on sale June 8 at the Center box office, online
at www.ocpac.org or by phone through Ticketmaster at (714) 740-7878.
