Vanguard splits pair
The Vanguard University baseball team’s doubleheader with The
Master’s College did not end as well as it began for the Lions
Saturday in Golden State Athletic Conference action at Vanguard.
The Lions (17-17, 7-7 in the GSAC) opened the doubleheader with a
9-6 victory, yet lost the second game, 9-8, as the Mustangs (17-11-3,
10-6) scored one run in the top of the ninth to win.
Justin Millward, Vanguard’s third baseman, went 3 for 5 with two
RBIs to help the Lions win the first game. Shortstop Matt Tisthammer
also finished 3 for 5, and he added two runs scored and an RBI.
Vanguard catcher Jonathan Bower pounded out a two-run home run to
give the Lions a 7-5 lead.
Kaleo Lopez, the Lions’ starter, delivered seven innings of work,
allowing seven hits and two earned runs to go with eight strikeouts
and two walks.
In Vanguard’s 9-8 loss, Millward led the Lions, going 3 for 4 with
one RBI and two runs scored. First baseman Scott Martin went 2 for 4
with 2 RBIs and two runs scored, while rightfielder Jason Brunett
also had a 2-for-4 performance and second baseman Robert Cruz
contributed two hits and two RBIs.
