Mustangs handle OV, 5-1
Costa Mesa High sophomore pitcher Jackie Butler made a triumphant
return Wednesday and senior Ann Marie Topps launched her fifth home
run of the season to lead the Mustangs to a 5-1 Golden West
League-opening softball win at Ocean View.
Butler, out four games after a thrown ball bounced off her glove
and loosened some teeth, gave up just two hits in a complete-game
effort, earning her fourth victory in as many decisions. She fanned
two and walked five, the latter a byproduct of some rust, Coach Rick
Buonarigo said.
Topps belted a two-run dinger to cap a three-run second and also
doubled to finish 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Her season average
actually dropped to .667 (18 for 27), but the Oregon-bound shortstop
upped her RBI total to 22 this spring. Her 16 career homers are a
school record.
Sophomore Kelly Topps singled in a run to open the Mesa scoring in
the first and Jane-E Yamamoto had the other RBI for the winners, who
improved to 5-3.
Ocean View dropped to 2-5 overall.

Estancia edges Lions
* The Estancia High softball team opened its first Golden West
League campaign with 1-0 victory over the visiting Westminster Lions
Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles (7-1) scored the game’s only run on a sacrifice fly by
sophomore Evelyn Flores in the fourth inning and freshman pitcher
Muriel Mason made it stand up with a complete-game four-hitter that
included four strikeouts and no walks.
Rebecca Kaplan opened the winning rally with a leadoff walk and
moved to second on a single by Hilary Ockey. Kaplan reached third on
a wild pitch and scored on Flores’ fly ball to center.
Ockey paced the Eagles’ six-hit attack, going 2 for 3, while Coach
Marc Rodig singled out Flores’ strong play at second base in an
errorless defensive effort.
Mason improved to 5-0 in the circle.
Westminster is now 4-4 overall.
