Fireworks should not be canceled

Please add me to the large list of citizens that want to see

fireworks in Huntington Beach this Fourth of July. It is very hard to

understand the reasoning given about not having fireworks when other

cities do it from barges in the ocean. Is there any way we can change

this bad decision? It is not right to ban safe and sane fireworks and

then not provide any firework show. This is a loss for the city.

MARK COHEN

Huntington Beach

Isn’t it sad that we are one of the few, if not only, beach cities

not to have Fourth of July fireworks on the beach. The City Council

vote should be rescinded and revoted to permit fireworks on the beach

not only this year but every year. A high school venue is not

appropriate for a beach city!

When we complained that the marathon run every year in January was

a hardship for people who live here and are having guests that

Sunday, the reply from the mayor was that this was good for the city.

I doubt that -- they run and they leave. And we can’t get to our

homes because the streets are all closed.

With two major hotel complexes now here and another coming, where

are the guests over the Fourth to go to see fireworks? To another

beach town along with the residents of Huntington Beach? We have a

police force to take care of those few who don’t have the good sense

to just enjoy the holiday! There is always the possibility that

guests just won’t check into those hotels over this holiday.

And -- the rest of us will be going somewhere else to have dinner,

see fireworks and enjoy what should be enjoyed right in our own

backyard. This city can’t have it both ways. This decision was as

stupid as the one not permitting alcohol to be served outdoors at our

restaurants. No wonder the other beach cities laugh at us.

I have lived in Orange County almost my entire life and have lived

in Huntington Beach for 4 1/2 years. While I have lived in Huntington

Beach, I have enjoyed and been involved in the Fourth of July

festivities.

Every Fourth of July I would wake up early and join Huntington

Beach residents in the 5K run, stay to enjoy the Parade in our spot

that we had saved with tape and chairs and then bike down to the

beach to enjoy the day.

But most of all I really enjoy the bike ride to Huntington Beach

High School to enjoy the fireworks display and was one of the reasons

I loved Huntington Beach. I could not believe what I read in the

Huntington Beach Independent that city officials have canceled the

fireworks celebration in Surf City. Huntington Beach has had several

festivities throughout the years with no problems, I ask my self why

would City Council take away such an innocent and patriotic thing at

a time that the residents of Huntington Beach need to have

patriotism? I truly hope that the City Council hears from all of the

residents and decide to have the fireworks display at the beach and

have the Surf City fireworks celebration once again.

Prop. 50 money should buy mesa

I feel that the state should definitely offer to purchase the

mesa.

One reason we all backed Proposition 50 was that the Bolsa Chica

mesa was included in the bill. It would seem, therefore, that the

mesa should take precedence over other potential sites.

We have enough development in Huntington Beach and the quality of

life will only get worse if 368 more boxes are built in an area that

should be preserved for future generations to observe one of the last

bits of nature left in Southern California.

Fireworks should not be brought back

Absolutely not, the fireworks question shouldn’t be brought back

to the table. Personally, I think there isn’t a lot to celebrate. The

economy of this country is in the tank and we stand at the brink of a

controversial war. I am not clapping my hands with glee over any of

it. For those who must have their fireworks, just turn on CNN in the

next few weeks and watch “the rockets red glare” over Iraq.

Debbie Borden should keep praying

I want you to know how this subscriber loves to back up an

honorable lady like Debbie Borden, who is willing to attend all the

council meetings here in Huntington Beach to open the meetings with

prayer. Prayer is what has made America the awesome nation that it

is. So, I just want to say hurrah for Debbie Borden. Keep it up and

we are praying for you.
