Sea Kings win tiebreaker
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team finished nine holes
tied, 191-191, with Esperanza at the Newport Beach Country Club
Monday, but won the tiebreaker, based on sixth man Alex Chikovani.
Chikovani shot 6-over-par 41, three strokes better than his Aztec
rival, to seal the nonleague victory in the opener for both schools.
CdM’s Zack Rabinovich was medalist (35), including a birdie on the
par-4 ninth. He hit five of seven possible fairways and had 12 putts.
Senior Nick Sherman and Brad Chamberlin shot 38, while Tim
Frohling and Rob Ury shot 40.
“It feels great,” said CdM Coach Mike Starkweather. “Last year we
would consider throwing out a 41. Now a 41 is a decent score on this
course.”
Eagles sweep season opener
* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team opened its
season impressively Monday, sweeping visiting Century, 15-2, 15-6,
15-3, in a nonleague match.
Josh Kornegay paced the Eagles with 10 kills and two blocks while
Chris Hartwell (nine kills) and setter Trevor Holmes (24 assists)
also contributed heavily for the Eagles.
Vanguard tops Villanova twice
* TENNIS: Vanguard University men’s and women’s tennis teams were
both victorious Monday in nonconference matches against visiting
Villanova.
The men won, 6-3, to improve to 4-2, while the women earned a 5-4
victory to go to 4-1.
Olga Hlushchanka didn’t lose a game in her singles sweep and Alena
Votavova beat her opponent, 6-0, 6-1. Hlushchanka and Votavova them
teamed up to earn an 8-3 victory in doubles, Vanguard’s only win in
that category.
Ivan Bjorkland and Philip Mardh each won their mens singles
matches and were both on the Lions two victorious doubles’ teams.
Champion paces OCC triumph
* GOLF: Orange Coast College sophomore Brad Champion shot
2-under-par 68 to lead the Pirates to a 364-407 Orange Empire
Conference men’s golf victory over visiting Cerritos at the Costa
Mesa Golf & Country Club’s Mesa Linda course Monday.
Champion, a transfer from Irvine Valley, had five birdies.
David Kendall (72), Shaun Vickers (74), Jake Allanach (75), Kelly
Wicks (75) also played well for the Pirates (4-2, 1-2 in conference).
Orange Coast errors costly
* SOFTBALL: Despite two two-run home runs, the Orange Coast
College softball team lost, 11-6, to Orange Empire Conference visitor
Riverside Monday.
OCC’s five errors led to five unearned runs for the Tigers.
Freshman catcher Christina Wakeman belted a two-run homer and Kera
Mathes’ two-run bomb made it 6-6 in the fifth.
Mathes had three RBIs and sophomore outfielder Autumn Pearce went
2 for 4 with a double for OCC (5-6, 1-2 in the OEC).
Riverside improved to 13-5, 3-0.
