No stopping the Hornets

The Hornets built an insurmountable 14-point lead to begin the game,

and cruised to a 63-37 victory over the Cypress Blue Devils in

National Junior Basketball boys seventh-and-eighth grade basketball

action.

Chase Pinesett, Timothy Regan, J.P. Gormly, Erik Rask and Kevin

Rask led the Hornets in the first quarter followed by solid efforts

from Gus Ellis, Austin Apramian, Thomas Dialynas, Andy Rovzar and

Erik Rask, as Newport built a 22-point lead in the second period.

Pinesett and Ellis controlled the inside while Erik Rask took over

at point guard. Dialynas and Erik each made two three-pointers for

Newport (11-0).

The Reebok Division I includes all teams with 10-0 records from

Riverside East, Riverside West, Cypress, Newport-Mesa, Chino Valley,

Fullerton, Villa Park and Yorba Linda.

In other NJB play:

* Celtics 41, Capo Valley 35

Connor Gaal led Newport’s Celtics with 26 points in the victory

against the Trojans, while Jonathan Metcalfe, Aaron Hawkins, Drew

Hoffenberg, Connor Maloney and Alex Yelich all played solid defense.

The Celtics, of Division 3, finish with the best record in league,

9-1.

Newport-Mesa sizzles

* HOOPS: Every girl scored for the Newport-Mesa eighth grade

girls All-Net basketball team in its largest point production of the

season, a 53-36 victory over the El Toro Staarz.

Taylor Holden led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds

followed by Allie Duernberger’s 12 points and eight assists.

Ashley Kirby led the team with eight rebounds while adding eight

points and Chelsea McCrea tallied five points and five boards.

Christine Daichendt grabbed six rebounds and scored four points as

did Brittany Deyan.

Ivy Melo played strong defense with nine steals, six rebounds and

three points, for Newport (9-4).

In fifth grade boys play:

* Red Raiders 56, Huntington Beach Rookies 32

The Red Raiders won two games to improve to 10-0. They beat

second-place Trabuco, 55-31, earlier in the weekend.

Dillon Campbell tallied 13 points to lead Newport in the

Huntington Beach game followed by 12 from Trevor Miles and 11 by Neil

O’Hara.

Austin Rios grabbed six rebounds followed by Parker Stone’s four.

Miles led Newport with 14 points in the Trabuco game while

Campbell added 10 and Randall Nelson picked up eight to go with

Collin Krahe’s seven.

Fletcher Della Grotta led with seven boards followed by J.D.

Abbott and Andrew Roth (each with five rebounds).

Ensign advances to lacrosse finals

* CLUB LACROSSE: Ensign Intermediate’s club lacrosse team shut

out top-ranked Hewes-2, 4-0, last weekend.

Team captain Trevor Kelly, along with Kip Armstrong, Erik Dobson

an Starnes Arnold, all scored goals for Ensign, who played a staunch

defensive game. Goalie Salvadore Torres made several saves in goal

for the team coached by Jim Crotwell, Ozzie Diaz and Vu Tran.

Combined efforts by parents, players and coaches help form the

team just months ago that competes in the Middle School North

Division of the Orange County Youth Lacrosse League.

Ensign advances to the finals against Rancho Santa Margarita at

Glen Yermo School in Mission Viejo this weekend.

Newport wheels past Mater Dei, 8-4

* CLUB ROLLER HOCKEY: With an 8-4 win over Mater Dei Sunday, the

Newport Harbor frosh-soph club roller hockey team will face Edison

this weekend for first place in the final game of the season.

Newport (12-1-0) entered the third period tied, 3-3, but then

outscored Mater Dei, 5-1, for the remainder.

Chris Willard (two goals, three assists), Grant Casserly (two

goals, two assists), Rory Campbell (two goals) along with Jesus

Sotelo and Zack Boston (one goal each), carried the offensive load.
