UCI explodes
The UC Irvine baseball team exploded for an eight-run seventh inning
Sunday en route to a 10-2 nonconference win at the University of San
Diego.
The Anteaters (4-7), who halted a six-game losing streak with an
8-4 victory Saturday over the Toreros, matched Saturday’s output with
11 hits. The 22 hits is the most in back-to-back games this season
for the Anteaters, who had scored two runs or fewer in six of their
first nine games, including a 7-1 loss in Friday’s series opener.
Junior second baseman Matt Fisher went 3 for 5 with a home run and
a double, finishing with five RBIs for the winners. Senior Chris
Klemm was 2 for 4 with two RBIs, while freshman Mark Wagner had two
hits and an RBI for UCI, which scored single runs in the second and
fifth, the latter erasing a 2-1 deficit.
Sophomore right-hander Jimmy Alstot (1-1) earned the victory out
of the bullpen, working 4 1/3 scoreless innings, after relieving
starter Michael Koehler in the fifth. He surrendered just three hits
and fanned four without issuing a walk.
The 10 runs were a season-high for the Anteaters, whose
single-game best is 13 hits (Feb. 8 against Santa Clara).
