Vanguard shuts out Simpson
Vanguard University pitching got a shot in the arm Thursday as
five pitchers combined to shut visiting Simpson College down, 5-0, in
nonconference baseball play.
Matt Caston, who went five innings and gave up four hits and one
walk, got the victory.
Vanguard’s bats were alive, as usual, with Robert Cruz, Matt
Tisthammer, Justin Millward and Jason Brunet all slugging doubles in
the eight-hit attack.
Brunet was 2 for 4.
Vanguard got two in the second with Brunett leading off with a
double, and Cruz doubling home the second run.
Tisthammer’s double got a run across in the fourth inning, and in
the seventh, Millward had an RBI-double in a two-run uprising.
Josh Carr went the distance for Simpson, allowing five runs on
eight hits.
Vanguard improved to 4-2. It was Simpson’s opener.
Vanguard returns to the field on Saturday with a 1 p.m. date with Chapman University at Hart Park in Orange.
