Anteaters retain No. 1 reputation
Coach John Speraw’s UC Irvine men’s volleyball team remains No. 1
in the nation for the second straight week in the USA Today/American
Volleyball Coaches Association poll released Tuesday.
The Anteaters (11-1), who were at No. 13 UC Santa Barbara Tuesday,
split home matches with No. 2 Hawaii last weekend, losing to the
Warriors, 3-1, Friday and winning, 3-0, Saturday. UCI continues on
the road with a match Friday at 12th-ranked Cal State Northridge.
The Anteaters received 14 first-place votes and 238 total points
in this week’s poll. Hawaii follows with 219 points, BYU is third
with 208, Pepperdine is fourth with 193 and Long Beach State fifth
with 165.

‘Eaters sweep
* MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: The No. 1-ranked UC Irvine men’s vollyeball
team swept No. 13 UC Santa Barbara Tuesday night in Santa Barbara,
30-21, 30-25, 30-26.
Monte Tucker led the Anteaters, 12-1, 5-1 in the Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation, with 15 kills and played at a .609 clip. He also
had four blocks.
The Anteaters outhit the Gauchos by a .430-.370 ration, and
outblocked them, 8-2.
Jimmy Pelzel had 10 kills and eight digs.
UCSB falls to 3-8, 1-5.
Pirates win, 2-1
* JC BASEBALL: Collin Stiltz brought home the game-winning run
with a two-out bunt single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give
host Orange Coast a 2-1 nonconference victory over Long Beach Tuesday
at Wendell Pickens Field.
After seeing their shutout bid spoiled by Long Beach’s two-out hit
by Kevin Price, the Bucs’ Brad Miller got aboard on an error, moved
to second on an errant throw and took third on a passed ball.
Stiltz eventually came up with the bases loaded and two out when
his drag bunt proved decisive.
Jeff Piaskowski singled and eventually scored on Ben Hanna’s
sacrifice fly.
Jason Crissman went 51/3 innings, allowing three hits and no runs.
Bryan Jackson got the win in relief.

Searle slams Cal Lu
* COLLEGE BASEBALL: Jason Searle of Vanguard University’s was a
one-man wrecking crew Tuesday, slugging a grand slam home run, going
4 for 6 with four runs scored and eight RBI as Vanguard pounded host
Cal Lutheran, 16-11, in a nonconference baseball game.
And he was just one of four bruisers in the VU attack. Justin
Millward was 6 for 6, with two runs and two RBIs. Joe Carnahan and
Jason Brunet were both 4 for 6.
Searle’s bases-clearing home run came in a five-run eighth inning
which pulled Vanguard from an 8-4 deficit, then the Lions scored
seven more in the ninth inning.
Searle finished with two home runs and a double. Also with home
runs were Carnahan and Millward.
Vanguard is 3-2. Cal Lu is 3-1.

Lions top Concordia
* WOMEN’S HOOPS: Jennifer Wiulcox (16), Robbin Dittenbir (15) and
Cecilia Josefsson (11) paved the way for Vanguard University’s
women’s basketball team, which dealt host Concordia University a
61-48 Golden State Athletic Conference defeat Tuesday night in
Irvine.
Vanguard improves to 17-7, 12-1 in the GSAC, Concordia falls to
15-10, 4-9.
UCI 12th in Arizona
* COLLEGE GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished 12th the
Arizona Intercollegiate tournament that concluded Tuesday at the
Arizona National Golf Club in Tucson.
UCI senior Jeff Coburn finished sixth at 7-under 206, scoring in
the 60s for all three rounds, including a 3-under 68 in Tuesday’s
final round. Junior Vinnie Poncino finished 47th at 217 (71-70-76),
senior Mike Lavery was 57th (66-79-75) at 220, while senior Ryan
Armstrong (72-72-73) and freshman Ryne Rindfleisch (76-71-76) tied
for 68th place at 223.
Arizona won the tournament with a 54-hole total of 23-under 829.
UCI completed the three rounds with a total of 856.
UTEP’s Chris Baryla was the medalist with a 10-under total of 203
on the par-71 course, one shot ahead of Arizona’s Chris Nallen.
Pirates just miss, 5-4
* JC MEN’S TENNIS: Orange Coast College dropped a 5-4
nonconference men’s tennis decision at Palomar Tuesday, once again
victimized by a lack of competitors.
The Pirates (1-1) won three of five singles matches and split a
pair of doubles matches, but forfeited a singles and doubles match.
