For openers, ‘Eaters win two
The UC Irvine women’s water polo team opened its season with two
victories in the Redlands Mini-Tournament Sunday.
Coach Julie Swail’s Anteaters used a balanced attack to defeat Cal
State Bakersfield and then they used some opportunistic defense to
score a 7-5 win over University of Redlands. Melissa Fernandez, a
junior who earned All-American honorable mention recognition last
year, scored two goals in each game. Junior Erica Horman and senior
Meghan O’Donnell posted three goals each on the day. UCI senior
goalie Sunceray Chamblee recorded five saves in the win over
Bakersfield.
The Anteaters will return to action at the UC San Diego Triton
Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
