Day owns Ocean View
Costa Mesa High senior Sharon Day scored two goals and added three
assists to lead the Mustangs girls soccer team to a 5-0 Golden West
League victory over visiting Ocean View Wednesday.
“She just owned that game,” said Mesa Coach Dan Johnston, whose
team improved to 15-1-2, 9-0-0 in league and needs one win to clinch
the Golden West title.
Day scored twice in the first half, off assists from her younger
sister Jasmin, and junior teammate Stacy Krikorian. Sophomore Jenny
Sparks scored two minutes into the second half off an assist by
Sharon Day and Nilani Duarte capped the scoring, finishing a long
throw-in from Day. Mesa goalie Kindra Bailey recorded three saves.
Junior goalie Kaitlyn Gentling is out with a hip injury.
Eagles fall in late stages to Westminster, 3-2
The Estancia High girls soccer team held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but host Westminster scored in the 78th minute to claim a 3-2 Golden West
League win Wednesday.
Maria Sanchez opened the scoring for the Eagles, then Ruth Chavero
broke a 1-1 tie to put the visitors on top, once again.
But Westminster stayed with it and overcame the second deficit to
prevail.
Estancia, which received 11 saves from Marci Kirchberg, called up
from the junior varsity, fell to 3-7-6, 2-4-2 in league.
