Vanguard rallies for a 6-3 triumph
Vanguard University’s baseball team opened the 2003 season with a
stirring four-run sixth inning to lift the Lions to a 6-3
nonconference victory over visiting California Baptist Thursday on
the winner’s diamond.
Kaleo Lopez, who came on in the sixth inning, went four innings
and allowed one hit and one run to get the victory.
Vanguard had found itself in a 3-1 deficit through 5 1/2innings,
but it all turned around in the sixth when Jason Searle was hit by a
pitch and Joe Carnahan walked.
A one-out miscue and a wild pitch followed and Scott Martin drew a
walk, then a passed ball ensued and finally catcher Jonathan Bower
delivered the blow of the game, a two-run double.
The Lions had opened up with a score in the first inning when Matt
Tisthammer singled and scored on a passed ball.
Cal Baptist responded with a two-run home run by Steve Ferreira in
the third inning, and added another run in the fourth on Matt Price’s
RBI double.
Vanguard’s other score came in the third inning when designated
hitter Jason Searle drove in a run with a base hit.
Cal Baptist trimmed the deficit to 6-4 in the eighth inning when
Matt Price connected for a solo home run.
Marcus Harris pitched five solid innings for the Lions, giving up
three runs on seven hits and striking out two batters.
The Lions, 1-0, will play the Vanguard alumni on Saturday at 1
p.m.
