Ocean View High began its quest Monday night for a fifth

consecutive Golden West League boys’ basketball championship by

defeating host Costa Mesa, 56-51, in the league opener for both

schools.

Senior guard Casey Ortiz led the Seahawks with 21 and senior

guard/forward Alan Kreymer netted 15.

Ocean View, 12-3 overall heading into a Wednesday night game

against league rival Orange, was up only 25-24 at the half, outscored

Costa Mesa by four points in the third quarter and then held off the

pesky Mustangs (3-12) down the stretch.

In other boys’ basketball, Marina continued to roll as it headed

toward the start of Sunset League play on Friday.

The Vikings concluded nonleague play on Monday by rolling over

host Canyon, 75-55.

Stephen Becker tied a school record for assists with 14, tying the

mark of former Marina and University of Notre Dame standout Rich

Branning, who established the single-game mark in 1974.

Becker also contributed nine points to an offense that saw James

Lambert lead the way with 18 points and Matt Brennan and Matt McNease

each score 17.

Marina preceded that win with a 66-44 rout of Newport Harbor at

the PlyoCity North/South Challenge held at El Toro High.

The four-game tournament pitted teams from north county against

teams from south county.

Four players scored in double figures and another hit

double-digits in assists.

Brett Brown paved the way with 15 points, Brennan scored 14 and

Lambert and McNease each had 12.

Becker dished out 10 assists.

Edison was a 64-52 winner over host Buena Park. Tommy Grady topped

all scorers with 24 points and Billy Braun contributed 18.

Brett Van Voorhis matched nine points with nine rebounds and

Brandon MacLaughlin scored 14 points as Huntington Beach won at

Cypress, 36-33.

In nonleague girls’ basketball, Huntington Beach wrapped up its

nonleague slate Monday night with a 50-35 road win over Villa Park.

Katia Hadj-Hamou scored 20 points and Mo Finn finished with 11 as

the Oilers improved to 10-6.

In a previous victory against Valencia, Alisha Mountford netted a

game-high 18 points and Elaine Diaz connected on four three-point

shots and finished with 14 points. Finn added 11 points to Huntington

Beach’s 51-46 nonleague win.

Edison put a wrap on its nonleague schedule with a 45-38 home

victory over Don Lugo.

Rebecca Kepilino led all scorers with 23 points. Charger teammate

Valerie Katayama had 10.

In nonleague girls’ soccer, Ocean View combined a Stacie Girardeau

goal with a standout defensive performance to shut out host Garden

Grove, 1-0.

In boys’ soccer, Jaime Martinez scored twice, and Miguel Cruz and

Dejean Voiku each scored once when Ocean View downed host Costa Mesa,

4-2, in a Golden West League opener on Monday.
