Former Estancia High tennis standout Devin Bowen, who grew up

playing at Mesa Verde Tennis Club, won a match Monday for the career

highlight list.

Bowen, who played collegiately at Texas Christian, and Italian

partner Davide Sanguinetti teamed to shock the top-seeded doubles

team of Donald Johnson and Jared Palmer, both Americans, 7-5, 6-3, in

the first round of the Heineken Open in Auckland, New Zealand.

A consistent doubles player on the Association of Tennis

Professionals Tour since 1994, Bowen entered this season with

$368,362 in career earnings. The season-opening Heineken Open is

among the events leading up to the Australian Open, the year’s first

Grand Slam. Bowen reached the third round at the Australian Open last

year.

Bowen, 30, has played in several Grand Slam events in his career.
