Co-founder of developer Donahue Schriber dies

Newport-Mesa mourned a beloved business leader after real estate

developer Daniel Donahue died from complications from heart surgery

on Tuesday. Co-founder of Donahue Schriber, the 60-year-old’s

lifetime achievements included helping transform Fashion Island into

a renowned retail mecca.

City leaders continue to wait for word on whether a complaint

filed in November 2001 is considered by the district attorney’s

office to be a violation of state open-meeting laws. Greenlight

leader Phil Arst charged that meetings in 2001 between the Koll Co.,

Conexant and city officials should have been held in a public forum.

A second Greenlight complaint was dismissed in October by the

district attorney. That complaint alleged that the city’s hiring of

airport lobbyists should have been decided in a public forum.

A lovesick sea lion scored some sympathy after he started

appearing on the beach in West Newport to sun himself. Animal experts

say the 300- to 400-pound male sea lion was not sick, just an outcast

during mating season because he was still too young and too small to

win mates and a place at sea lion breeding grounds.

As a July 1 deadline nears for meeting tough new water-quality

requirements, city leaders say they’re optimistic that they can meet

the rules of the water quality board. City staff is working to

educate residents and businesses about ways to keep pollutants out of

storm drains.
