Sailors lose in overtime
SANTA ANA -- Newport Harbor High’s girls soccer team lost its
Excalibur Tournament opener to Alta Loma on penalty kicks Thursday at
Foothill High.
The Sailors (0-5-2) tied Alta Loma (4-2-2) with 10 minutes
remaining in the game on an Amy Burlingham cross to Michelle McRorie,
who booted the ball in from six yards.
But Alta Loma outscored the Sailors, 7-6, on penalty kicks to
claim the victory.
The Braves had scored five minutes before the Sailors scored in
regulation to take a 1-0 lead.
Newport goalkeeper Kara DeMille made one save and the Brave keeper
had six saves, said Newport Coach Jason Sorrell.
“We had some kids come in from (junior varsity) and they didn’t do
too badly,” Sorrell said. “Everyone did well.”
Newport plays the loser of Esperanza and University (San Diego)
today at 8 a.m. at the same site.
