Chargers win Aztec Classic

Edison High turned back all comers to win the Aztec Classic, which

culminated in championship-round play last Saturday at La Quinta

High.

The Chargers (5-0) claimed the title by beating University in the

tournament final, 60-57.

Tommy Grady led the way with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Steve

Cornett and Billy Braun, both named all-tournament, scored 16 and 12

points, respectively.

Edison earned a spot in the title game when Nick Snowden hit a

three-point shot to beat the buzzer in a 47-44 semifinal win over

Sunset League rival Huntington Beach.

Snowden led the Chargers with 12 points, but the Oilers’ Brandon

McLaughlin led all scorers with 24 points.

Huntington Beach played for third place in the Aztec Classic, but

fell to Orange Lutheran, 45-39. Bret Van Voohis hit three three-point

shots and led the Oilers with 21 points.

Ocean View’s bid to win the Tournament of Champions on its home

floor was dashed by Westchester of Los Angeles, which used a

fourth-quarter run to pull away to a 56-46 victory in the tournament

final.

Matt Sargeant scored 16 points, and Casey Ortiz finished with 12

for the Seahawks (8-2).

Sargeant also led Ocean View against Villa Park, his game-high 26

points instrumental in the Seahawks’ 71-65 semifinal victory.

Marina began play Monday night in the Sonora Tournament by routing

Calvary Chapel, 91-48.

All 12 players scored for the Vikings, who blew the game open by

outscoring Calvary Chapel, 30-5, in the third quarter.

James Lambert led the way with 23 points and three other Vikings

scored in double figures as Matt Brennan had 12 points, Brett Brown

scored 11 and Matt McNease contributed 10.

In girls’ basketball action:

Marina claimed the fifth-place trophy in the South Coast Classic

at University High as Sarah McLeod and Mimi Kaneko each scored 12

points in a 46-38 win over Torrance.

Huntington Beach took seventh place in the Hoop-La Tournament at

San Clemente High by edging Woodbridge, 48-47. Katia Hadj-Hamou

scored 13 points to lead the Oilers.

In girls’ water polo, Huntington Beach downed La Serna, 6-5, in

consolation play at the Villa Park Tournament.

In girls’ soccer, Edison fell to North Torrance, 1-0, in the

championship game of the South Coast Tournament.

In boys’ soccer, Ocean View Tournament action saw the host

Seahawks blank Saddleback, 1-0, in pool play.
