Holiday musical festival on tap

A Surf City Catholic church is sponsoring a seasonal music

festival on Dec. 15.

Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Church has scheduled the concert for

7:30 p.m. that day.

Featuring its 80-voice Parish Choir, Children’s Choir, Handbell

Choir, organ and full orchestra, the church will perform many holiday

favorites. The eclectic concert will include “O Come, O Come

Emmanuel,” “Silent Night,” Rachmaninov’s “Bogoroditse Devo” and the

Nigerian song “Bethelhemu.”

Brian Dean, the Parish Choir’s conductor, will lead the various

musical ensembles. Barbara Worseley will provide piano accompaniment.

Mark Purcell will play the organist.

The church is asking for a free-will offering at the door of $7

for adults and $5 for students and seniors. For more information,

Author to sign copies of surf book

Stuart Coleman is scheduled to appear at Duke’s Huntington Beach

on Dec. 19 to sign copies of a new book about legendary big-wave

surfer Edward Aikau.

Coleman will appear at the waterfront restaurant from 6 to 8 p.m.

that day.

Coleman has written “Eddie Would Go: The Story of Eddie Aikau,

Hawaiian Hero.” the first full-length biography of Aikau. Restaurant

namesake Duke Kahanamoku was a mentor and hero to Aikau.

Coleman’s book chronicles the adventures of Aikau, who surfed the

largest waves at Hawaii’s North Shore. As a crew member of the canoe

Hokule’a, in 1978, Aikau lost his life during a sea rescue. He was a

no-holds-barred lifeguard who threw himself into the most treacherous

surf to rescue swimmers.

During the research stage of the book, Coleman won access to

Aikau’s family and friends. The author conducted more than 40

interviews.

The publication of the book comes three months before the 25th

anniversary of Aikau’s death.

Open call at the Center for artists

The Huntington Beach Art Center has put out an open call to

artists to submit their work for the annual exhibition, “Centered on

the Center.”

Artists are asked to submit their works on Jan. 3 and Jan. 4. The

center will accept submissions between noon and 6 p.m. Jan. 3 and

between noon and 4 p.m. Jan. 4.

When all galleries are full, no other submissions will be

accepted. Center members will be given first crack at submitting

works the first day, a Friday. Nonmembers must wait until Saturday.

There are some limitations on what types of works can be accepted.

They must not exceed 72 inches in either direction or weigh more than

50 pounds.

More than 200 artists are expected to submit works.

To participate in the exhibition costs $15 for one piece or $25

for two pieces. No more than two pieces will be accepted.
