Huntington Beach routs Los Amigos

Huntington Beach High opened play in the La Quinta Tournament

Monday night with a 70-27 victory over Los Amigos.

The Oilers, who opened the season last week with a victory over

Aliso Niguel, rolled to a 46-16 halftime lead. Coach Richard Alvarez

took his starters out mid-way through the third quarter.

With his second unit closing out the game, the Oilers shut out the

Lobos in the fourth quarter, outscoring them, 13-0.

“We’re just playing good team basketball right now,” Alvarez said.

“Everyone on this team knows their role, and we have guys out there

sacrificing. That’s great team basketball.”

Brandon MacLaughlin poured in 20 points, senior post Bret Van

Voorhis scored 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds, and Denis

Abando hit a trio of three-point baskets to finish with 11 points for

the Oilers.

Huntington Beach advanced to play Corona del Mar Wednesday night

in a championship bracket game.

In other boys’ basketball action:

Marina got a jump-start on the season by putting on a solid

performance en route to an appearance in the championship game at the

Gahr Tournament.

The Vikings scored a mild upset in defeating highly-regarded

Mayfair, 73-66. Matt Brennan scored 23 points to lead the way, Matt

McNease came off the bench to score 16 points, and Stephen Becker had

12 and eight assists. The Vikings hit nine three-point shots, Brennan

leading the way with three.

Lambert then posted a game-high 29 points and Brennan hit for 13

more as Marina downed host Gahr, 65-59.

The Vikings reached the tournament’s title game where they fell to

Long Beach Millikan, 80-71. Lambert scored 25 points, Becker had 18

points and nine assists, and Brennan finished with 11 points.

The Marina trio was named to the all-tournament team.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Huntington Beach launched its season with two big wins, beating

Katella, 44-39, and Bell Gardens, 52-42, in the opening rounds of

pool play at the Troy NJB Tournament.

Forwards Mo Finn and Katia Hadj-Hamou each scored nine points for

the Oilers against Katella. Finn and center Megan Molden each posted

14 points in the Bell Gardens win.

Huntington Beach next fell to host Troy, 82-22, and then was edged

by La Habra, 42-41, in the third-place game.

Hadj-Hamou and Finn scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, against

La Habra.

Edison’s season opener was also a success, as the Chargers dumped

Dana Hills, 52-36, in pool play at the Centurion Classic at Century

High. Leila Abufarie poured in 28 points and Valerie Katayama added

10 points.

The Chargers followed that win by routing Irvine, 65-16, holding

the Vaqueros to just three second-half points. Abufarie again led the

way and matched Irvine’s point total by scoring 16 points.

The Chargers fell to El Dorado in the tournament championship,

losing 38-25. Valerie Katayama led Edison with 14 points.

Marina ripped Villa Park, 57-29, in the Vernie Ford Tournament.

Mimi Kaneko scored 13 points, Sarah McLeod had 12 and Rachel Maulit

scored 11.

Ocean View fell twice in the Vernie Ford Tournament, losing to

Saddleback in overtime, 49-47, and to host Fullerton, 49-36. Erica

Williams led the Seahawks against Saddleback with 23 points, and

scored 14 against Fullerton.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Huntington Beach and Redondo Union fought to a scoreless tie in

nonleague play.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Noe Osorio netted two goals, and Manny Bermudez scored on a header

for Marina, which opened its season with a 3-1 triumph over

Northwood, the defending CIF Division IV champion.

Edison began its 2002-2003 season with a 2-0 shutout of visiting

Trabuco Hills.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Huntington Beach opened up play in the Poway Invitational by

drilling La Costa Canyon, 18-2. Ten Oilers got into the scoring act,

led by Jessica Marr’s five goals and three more by Rebecca Gearty.
