Larsen, Wing named to the All-West team
UC Irvine senior middle blocker Rebecca Larsen and sophomore
outside hitter Kelly Wing were named AVCA All-West Region honorable
mention.
Larsen and Wing helped UC Irvine post a 19-11 overall record for
its second-highest number of victories in school history. The
Anteaters also finished with a 10-8 Big West Conference record, the
first winning record in 19 years of Big West action for the
Anteaters.
Both Larsen and Wing were Big West Players of the Week and earned
first team All-Big West Conference honors, giving UCI more than one
honoree for the first time.
The pair also rewrote the UCI records this season. Larsen set new
marks in match hitting percentages, taking over the top three spots
in three consecutive matches (.877, .786, .778), while Wing became
UCI’s all-time season kill leader (584), surpassing current AVP pro
Ali Wood (491).
Larsen and Wing were also ranked nationally over several weeks.
Larsen climbed from 13th to first in hitting percentage in a little
over a month. She ended the regular season as the nation’s best in
hitting percentage. Wing entered the NCAA’s Top 30 in kills per game
in mid-September and ascended as high as sixth before finishing the
season at No. 10.
UCI’s last all-region honoree was two-time second-team selection
Popi Edwards (1993 and ‘94) and the honor is the first for both
Larsen and Wing.
