VOLLEYBALL: ‘Eaters Utah St. in Big West finale
The UC Irvine Anteaters closed out the Big West schedule with a
30-22, 30-20, 30-22 win over Utah State tonight in Crawford Hall to
improve to 17-11 overall and 10-8 in the Big West. The 10-8
conference finish marks the first time in school history that a UCI
women’s volleyball team has posted a winning record in 19 years of
competing in the Big West Conference.
With two matches remaining in the season, UCI’s 17 wins is the
fourth-highest win total in the school records.
After an emotional ceremony for seniors Chanda McLeod and Rebecca
Larsen, the Anteaters were all business, taking the early 4-1 lead in
game one. The Aggies closed the gap at 8-7 and stayed within a point
for much of the set.
UCI took early control in the second game as Dana Kurzbard and
Kelly Wing paired up for consecutive block assists to cap a
four-point rally.
Utah State (14-16, 7-11) kept the third game close in the early
stages, but the Anteaters held off the Aggies behind Wing’s 16 kills.
McLeod and Kurzbard rounded out the double-figure scoring with 13
kills apiece. McLeod also led UCI with 10 digs. Kurzbard led all
players with five block assists as UCI held the 12-0 block assist
advantage. Setter Ashlie Hain had 45 set assists for the Anteaters.
