Rojas, Rosete third in prelims

WALNUT -- Estancia High’s boys and Corona del Mar’s boys and

girls, and Estancia’s Diana Rosete proved worthy of CIF Finals

competition next week following solid performances on a hot day at

Mt. San Antonio College Saturday.

Rosete finished third overall in the Division III girls race,

clocking a 19:21 over the three-mile course.

Estancia’s boys were second overall with 96 points, and Corona del

Mar was sixth with 150 points, each getting a spot in the Division

III Finals.

Corona del Mar’s girls were second overall with 88 points to

clinch a berth in the Finals on Saturday at the same site.

Corona del Mar Coach Bill Sumner watched his girls post a solid

pack with Melissa Swigert 14th at 20:34, Anne St. Geme 16th at 20:36,

Ahlia Kattan 17th at 20:41 and Becky Cummins 18th at 20:43. Taryn

Kawata got the final scoring finish at 33rd in 21:23. Also competing,

Keelan Kuyler (21:51) and Sarah Claster (22:48).

Estancia’s girls were eighth overall and missed a finals berth, on

a team basis.

Behind Rosete’s third-place effort were Crystal Rincon (22:46),

Fatima Carrasco (23:18), Brittanie Starn (23:32), Lucy Leon (23:36),

Marina Abdul (23:45) and Diana Castro (24:52).

Estancia’s boys were second overall with 96 points, paced by

Humberto Rojas, who went 16:04 for third place.

Alex Cahuantzi was 11th in 16:32, Aaron Van Geem was 19th in

16:51, Panfilo Elias was 30th in 17:08 and Francisco Morales was 45th

in 17:30. Also competing for Charlie Appell’s Eagles: Abel Flores

(17:55) and Sean Zich (18:09).

Corona del Mar’s boys were paced by Kevin Artz, who was 15th in

16:45. The pack of Blake Dillion (33rd in 17:12), Jack Turner (34th

in 17:24), Danny Quinlan (41st in 17:24) and Bo Weidner (42nd in

17:25) followed. Also competing: J. C. Turner (17:31) and Brandon

Borcorman (17:35).

Newport Harbor’s Division II entry came up short in the heat and

hills of Mt. SAC.

Junior Lauren Paul was 10th in 19:41 and freshman Amy Klippert was

17th in 20:12 in the girls competition.

The boys were 12th overall, paced by Nick Miller. who was 26th in

17:02.

Senior Alec Urtusuastegui, considered a threat for a finals berth,

faded in the heat and finished 54th in 17:52. Other Sailors: Nick St.

Andre (18:34), freshman Kenny Rakestraw (18:44) and freshman Wes

Urtusuastegui (19:09).
