BEST BUYS

You’d expect to see Indian Territory Inc. on Canyon Road in Santa

Fe, not in Laguna Beach. Nationally known as a great resource for

collectors and investors since 1969, Indian Territory has one of the

largest collections of Navajo baskets and rugs from the 1870s to

1940s. Basket sizes vary: There are large urn shapes for storing

grains, flat shapes for gambling games and large conical bowls for

making acorn mush, a staple food in California. More than 50 Western

tribal cultures are represented. The store also specializes in

historic to contemporary Pueblo pottery, early man stone artifacts,

Hopi kachinas, antique quill and bead work, Zuni fetishes and Navajo,

Hopi and Zuni jewelry. Owner Len Wood and his two sons, Jeff and

Matt, also offer appraisals, lectures, consultations, collection

development and Navajo rug cleaning and restoration. Open from 10

a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday at 305 D N. Coast Highway.

ALL THE BEST KITCHEN SUPPLIES

Laguna Culinary Arts, a well-known gourmet cooking school, has a

small retail section with all of owner Nancy Milby’s favorite cooking

tools and supplies.

“I only carry what I really like to use,” Milby says. “And

everything is the highest quality for the money.”

All tools are used in the cooking school, and students get 10% off

on their class day. Milby says the most popular item is the stove-top

smoker for $55. “It smokes fish, vegetable, and chicken; low fat and

very, very flavorful.” Other items include: “The best roasting pan

you’ll ever have,” a copper pan from France for $175; a 2-pound bag

of Belgium’s finest Callebaut chocolate pieces for $12; a $6 oil

sprayer; razor-sharp new technology microplane graters that can’t

rust; and fun-colored spatulas and flexible cake and muffin pans made
