Carpenter qualifies for U.S. Amateur

NEWPORT BEACH -- Big Canyon Country Club’s Michael Carpenter, the
reigning Costa Mesa city golf champion, qualified for the U.S.
Amateur Championship Aug. 19-25 at Oakland Hills Country Club in
Birmingham, Mich.
Carpenter, who will defend his Costa Mesa title Aug. 10-11 at
Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club, shot 69-70--139 in a 36-hole qualifier Monday through the Southern California Golf Association at
Goose Creek Golf Club in Mira Loma, where 90 golfers played for only
three spots on the par-72, 6,520-yard layout.
Glendale’s Keith Kinsel qualified first at 67-70--137, followed by Carpenter and Tyler Mays of Las Vegas (70-69--139). Carpenter lives
in Laguna Beach.
Newport Beach’s Nick Lindesay (149), Costa Mesa’s Mark Les (152),
Costa Mesa’s Gary Hill (155) and Newport Beach’s Jared Greene (no
score) were among the 87 who did not qualify.
