Selwyn D. Mansell of Costa Mesa...
Selwyn D. Mansell of Costa Mesa graduated from the U.S. Air Force
Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo. in June, receiving a bachelor’s
degree and a commission as second lieutenant. The former Estancia
High School graduate will receive non-rated training in
communications before leaving for communications school. He will also
be an assistant coach for the Air Force Associate basketball team for
a year.... The American Cancer Society held its annual volunteer
celebration on July 11, during which Bill Wood, the society board’s
chairman, recognized and honored four local residents for their
outstanding service. Dorothy Hill of Corona del Mar was named the
Discovery Shop Volunteer of the Year for her upscale resale shop.
Donna Bianchi and Joyce Weiss, both of Newport Beach, and Bobbitt
Williams of Newport Coast were recognized at the event for their
commitment to the Cattle Baron’s Ball, a fund-raising event that
raised more than $500,000 for the organization. The efforts of the
society’s volunteers helped more than 3,500 cancer patients last
year, according to the society.... Marine Corps Pfc. Brian J. Torres
participated in exercise Sea Soldier 2002 while assigned to the 13th
Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Pendleton. Torres and his
fellow Marines honed their skills during the 12-day live-fire training exercise with soldiers from the Western Frontier Regiment of
the royal Army of Oman. The exercise occurred more than two weeks
after Torres’ military unit completed offensive raids against Taliban
and Al Qaeda forces during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan
....Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class David J. Smith, son of Janine and
Henry Smith of Newport Beach, departed on a six-month deployment to
the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf. He was assigned to the guided
missile destroyer Barry and, along with more than 10,000 Atlantic
Fleet Sailors and Marines, is ready to participate in Operation
Enduring Freedom. Smith, a graduate of Amador Valley High School in
Pleasanton, Calif., joined the Navy in September 1998 ....Michael M.S. Chun, senior vice president of Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo, will
assume the position of board chairman in addition to his current
responsibilities. Chun will work with developers worldwide, and more
particularly in Hawaii. He has directed numerous award-winning resort
projects and is currently working on projects in California, Florida,
Egypt, Singapore, Mexico and Ireland.
