Tars’ alumni tourney set
Newport Harbor High boys alumni from the 1970s through 2002 are
encouraged to lace up their gym shoes for some action on the hardwood
in the second annual Newport Harbor Alumni Basketball Tournament,
scheduled July 27.
Ten teams of four will play a single three-on-three half-court
game of 20 minutes. Four of five winners will advance, based on
largest margin of victory. The players from the four winning teams
will then be divided into two eight-man teams, which will play one
five-on-five full-court 20-minute championship game, said Jaime
Holmes, the tournament director.
Players should not form their own teams, as tournament officials
will place players from each decade on teams, Holmes said.
“Larry Hirst (Newport Harbor boys basketball coach) and I sat down
and came up with the format,” Holmes said. “We wanted to mix up the
generations.”
Players can either register before July 27 and pay $25 or pay $30
the day of the tournament. Proceeds benefit the Newport Harbor High
Basketball Booster Club and players receive breakfast and T-shirt. To
register, phone Holmes at (949) 642-7913.
Greg Perrine, a 2002 graduate, has signed to play, Holmes said.
Check-in begins at 8 a.m. with play beginning at 9 a.m.
