Founder of Buchbinder Industry struck and killed

Huntington Beach resident Jay A. Buchbinder, 69, was killed early

Sunday morning when a car struck the tandem bicycle he was riding with

his son Gregg.

Gregg D. Buchbinder, 49, of Long Beach sustained neck injuries during

the accident.

The men were riding east on the shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway when

they were struck from behind by a 1989 blue Toyota Cressida.

Police believe that Long Beach resident Chanpenbeau Sar, 43, dozed off

at the wheel at 6:19 a.m. and struck the pair, said Sgt. Gary Meza.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, he said.

“We determined that immediately,” Meza said.

Jay Buchbinder was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident and

Gregg Buchbinder was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital.

Buchbinder was the founder of Jay Buchbinder Industries. The Long

Beach based restaurant supply company was established in 1968, has more

than 400 employees and has 10 U.S. regional sales offices.

A recorded phone message Tuesday said that the Buchbinder Industry

offices were closed on Tuesday in observance of Jay Buchbinder’s death.

Gregg Buchbinder is the chief executive officer of Emeco, a

Pennsylvania based chair manufacturer. Emeco is owned by Jay Buchbinder.

Huntington Beach Police Detectives are still investigating the

accident. They are asking anyone who may have seen the accident to call

the department’s traffic bureau at (714) 536-5666.
