Readers Respond -- Wedding fireworks win over Newport Beach

I would just like to commend the wedding party for having some

beautiful fireworks on that Sunday night (“Newport fireworks display

surprises residents,” June 11). It was something nice to have to shake

out some of these codgy-old people who live down here. I’m only 72, so

I’m not in that category. So I just wanted you to know that it was very

enjoyable seeing some fireworks and I’m certain that someone truly did

enjoy that. I would urge the city to continue allowing that to happen.

This is regarding the June 9 fireworks at a quarter of 10. I live

practically right under them. I live in Cameo Shores and I wanted to tell

you it didn’t hurt anybody. We enjoyed it. It’s fun.

It reminds me of the 1930s when you didn’t need a permit to do

anything in this city or town. You could just enjoy Newport Beach as

Newport Beach. This guy honored his daughter’s marriage. I think it was

wonderful. I know it must have cost a lot of dough, but if he had it and

he wanted to enjoy it, God bless him.

Hey, wait a minute, I grew up on Balboa Island sitting on North

Bayfront looking over Promontory Point at the Dunes show and loved every

minute (“City fireworks attempts fail to sparkle,” June 25). It was

always a neighborhood tradition.

Why not have the show off a barge or on our newly reconditioned ($2.5

million) pier? The Balboa Peninsula can handle the Christmas Boat Parade

every year and it works.

Look, if anybody is dumb enough to come down to the peninsula between

6 and 9 p.m., they probably are already there or with their friends in

the Newport Heights, Kings Place, Irvine Terrace, Corona del Mar Cliffs,

Spy Glass, Lido Island, both turning basins. Some existing views will be

blocked while others will improve.

Councilman Steve Bromberg will just have to move the gang from North

Bayfront over to South Bayfront on Balboa Island.

As far as additional police support, I say, we’re covered. Just do it.

We seem to have plenty of qualified enforcement present in the area.

Prove me wrong.

Also, City Manager Homer Bludau, there’s always been a traffic jam off

the peninsula after the fireworks show from the Dunes that lasts till 11

p.m. or so. Just ask Louise Fundenberg about the traffic.

It’s been a tough year with Sept. 11. We need to celebrate being

Americans. Let’s have a bang on the Fourth.

If Stephen Sutherland does it, he’s got my vote. See ya Marinapark.

Balboa Peninsula

We have been residents of Corona del Mar since we purchased our home

here in 1978. On June 9 about 9:15 p.m., we were startled to hear what

sounded like fireworks. We hurried outside and saw the beginning

fireworks in the Southwestern sky. We love fireworks. Oh so American. So

then we rushed up to our recently added deck and delighted in the ongoing

display along with many of our neighbors who were lucky enough to have a

high access to such a spectacular view oohing and awing in unison.

Do we think the city should reconsider allowing special celebrations

with fireworks? No way.

The wedding fireworks were terrific. Beautiful, with many patterns and

color combinations not seen before. Enjoyed from our back deck and we

doubt that one will see better on the Fourth and Disneyland can eat its

heart out. To accommodate those who had a snit, the city might move the

time window up. Otherwise, thanks for the entertainment and have a happy

marriage whoever you are.

I heard the karumph and sound of firecracker bursts and looked out at

the most beautiful fireworks I have ever seen in my long life. They

brought a grin to my face. I knew that someone was celebrating a

momentous event, and I celebrated with them in spirit. I would like to

thank the wedding couple and wish them a long and dazzling life together.
