Triathlon: Herbert qualifies for World Championships
Newport Beach resident Kevin Herbert qualified for the Ironman
Triathlon World Championship, scheduled Oct. 19 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.
Herbert earned the qualification after he finished in the top 10 in
the Utah Triathlon June 8. The Utah Triathlon consisted of the same
distances as the famed Ironman, a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a
26.2-mile marathon run.
Herbert will compete in the Pacific Coast Triathlon at Cyrstal Cove in
Newport Beach July 14.
He will also prepare for the World Championship with triathlons in
Carlsbad, Santa Barbara and Malibu before October.
The Ironman limits its field to 1,500 competitors and there are more
than 50,000 triathletes, who annually attempt to qualify for the renowned
event in Hawaii.
