PLANNING COMMISSION WRAP-UP

WHAT HAPPENED:

The Planning Commission approved a new law that will require all of

the cellular towers in the city to be identified, and all wireless

telephone operators to inform the city when they no longer plan to use a

tower.

WHAT IT MEANS:

If wireless telephone operators do not give the city notice that the

tower is no longer being used it will be considered abandoned. The law

will also make it easier for wireless providers to install new towers

that are more aesthetically pleasing. A new tower could be approved

without holding a public hearing if it could be designed to blend in with

the surrounding environment.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The Planning Commission approved a request submitted by the Public

Works Department to buy a 4.5-acre parcel of land on Newland Street. A

10-million gallon water reservoir will be built on the land in the

future.

WHAT IT MEANS:

Construction of the water reservoir is needed to ensure that an

adequate water supply is available to residents and businesses. Now that

the parcel of land has been acquired, no one will be able to build on

that land. Construction of a reservoir will require a coastal development

permit and a recommendation by the Design Review Board.
