Costa Mesa foundation hosts empowerment day
The Earth Resource Foundation of Costa Mesa recently held its first
High School Youth Empowerment Day in an effort to empower students to
adopt more environmentally friendly habits.
Hosted by the Newport Harbor High School Earth Resource Club, more
than 100 students from 11 different high schools throughout Orange County
attended the “Rock Your World” day event and participated in various
interactive workshops while also learning how to live environmentally
responsible.
“An important reality is that the youth of today are willing to have
less so they can have more when it comes to a healthy Earth,” said
Stephanie Barger, executive director at the foundation. “It is for this
reason that informing and empowering our youth may be the most important
activity in which we can partake.”
The workshops focused on such topics as letter writing campaigns,
renewable energy alternatives, saving American buffalo, eliminating
household toxins, presenting environmental messages through performing
arts and how to become an articulate and respected activist.
Using material entirely printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper
and banners made from natural material, students participated in a
zero-waste event. They also ate a vegan meal provided by Mother’s Market
and Kitchen on paper plates made from recycled paper.
The foundation strives to “preserve, conserve and restore the Earth to
a healthy and sustainable state” as stated in its mission and believes
that this event is a move in that direction.
