WHAT HAPPENED:

The school board began discussions on Supt. Gary Rutherford’s plan to

implement $1.1 million in cuts to the school’s 2002-03 budget.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The board didn’t vote on Rutherford’s plan, but instead began

discussions. The board is expected to make a final determination about

the plan at its June 4 meeting.

In the plan, several teaching positions and funding for out-of-pocket

expenses of teachers would be eliminated. Class size will no doubt

increase if the cuts are accepted.

Board member Cathy McGough said she was troubled by the cuts, even if

many of them don’t directly impact classrooms.

WHAT THEY SAID:

“Any cut distresses us,” Board member Cathy McGough said. “If you

staff that tightly, if one child arrives, you can’t take that child.”
