Boys tennis: Ball out, but CdM reloads

NEWPORT BEACH - Corona del Mar High senior Erik Frisbie, who

usually plays doubles, replaced senior teammate Cameron Ball (ear

infection) as the top seed in singles in the Pacific Coast League boys

tennis championships Monday at CdM and swept through the first two

rounds.

Frisbie defeated Estancia senior Creighton Chun, 6-0, 6-1, in the

opening round, then went through Laguna Beach’s Andrew Ghenender, 6-2,

6-2.

Frisbie and Newport Harbor’s Andrew Cho will square off in today’s

semifinals at the Palisades Tennis Club.

Cho advanced with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Laguna Beach’s Dieter Schmitz

and a 7-6, 7-6 victory over CdM’s Wes Miller in the second round.

University teammates Jeff Lawrence, seeded third, and second-seeded Aaron

Yovan will face each other in the other semifinal.

In doubles at the Palisades Club, the top-seeded CdM team of junior

Garrett Snyder and freshman Carsten Ball defeated Costa Mesa’s David Lee

and Garrett Sneen, 6-0, 6-0. Lee and Sneen are both freshmen.

CdM’s other doubles team of Bryan Warsaw and Issei Saida, both

juniors, defeated Northwood’s David Eisner and Kunel Murdia, 6-0, 6-1, in

the first round, then upset third-seeded Anson Hsu and Andy Joe from

University, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, in the second round.

Snyder-Ball will face the fourth-seeded team from Northwood, Ryan

Aarnaes and Andy Moody, in today’s semifinals, while Warsaw-Saida will

collide with the second-seeded duo from Uni, Mike Haiei and Matt Chou.

Haiei-Chou defeated Costa Mesa’s Cuong Nguyen and Spencer Solomon in

the second round, 6-1, 6-2, after the Mesa pair advanced with a 6-1, 6-2

win over Northwood’s Mark Wolf and Michael Strenk in the first round.

Cameron Ball, who lost to Yovan last year in the PCL singles final,

7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-4, will not be eligible to compete in the CIF Southern

Section individual singles or doubles championships.
