LAGUNA BEACH
- The Costa Mesa boys volleyball team lost in four games, 15-12, 15-7,
12-15, 16-14, to Pacific Coast League counterpart Laguna Beach High
Thursday, ending the regular season 10-10, 2-8 in league, but hopes for a
postseason remain alive.
“Hopefully we have qualified as a CIF at-large team,” said coach Dave
Sorrells. “This was definitely our best match of the season. A parent
from Laguna Beach told me that that was the best defense he’s ever seen
from Costa Mesa. I think we might surprise some people.”
The CIF will announce at-large berths for the CIF Southern Section
playoffs Sunday, Sorrells said.
Costa Mesa senior Carlos Jaime had 24 digs, adding 15 kills, while
fellow senior Eli Solis had 20 digs and 16 kills.
Mesa senior Ed Moreno had 29 assists.
Jaime and senior Jeff Collett collected four stuff blocks apiece, and
blocked 16 balls that were covered on the Laguna Beach side, Sorrells
said.
Laguna Beach is 11-6, 7-3 in league.
