Newport Beach resident Constance Bean adopted “Handsome,” one of the

few small dogs available for adoption, said DiAnna Pfaff-Martin, founder

and organizer of the Community Animal Network.

“Strict housing restrictions force a high demand for small dogs,” she

said. “Shelters are full of large breed dogs. When small dogs do need

rescuing, many would-be foster families are afraid to open their homes to

unknowing behaviors. I feel our organization is between a rock and a hard

place with both the demand and the risk high.

“My solution to break this endless cycle is to represent more private

party adoptions that will help stop dogs that are abandoned at shelters

and losing their lives,” she continued. “If someone you know needs a new

home for their dog, please tell them the network can help place their dog

in a new home.”
