WHAT HAPPENED:

The school board approved a new three-year contract with the union

representing employees not involved in instruction.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The approximately 500 district employees who don’t teach -- a group

that includes bus drivers, janitors and clerical workers -- received a

5.2% pay hike and well as new programs for drug and alcohol treatment.

The district also won new powers to test members of the California

School Employees Assn. Chapter 375 for on-the-job drug or alcohol use.

The new contract covers the period from 2001 to 2004.

WHAT HAPPENED:

The school board opened contract talks with its teachers for a new

one-year deal.

WHAT IT MEANS:

The board kicked off negotiations with the Ocean View Teachers Assn.,

which represents about 500 teachers in Ocean View.

The teachers are asking for salary increases, modifications in work

hours and lowering of class sizes.

The teachers’ current contract expires on June 30. In the coming

months, they will begin negotiations on a contract covering the 2002-03

school year.
