Richard A. Zaferis was recently promoted to the rank of master

sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Zaferis is a training and tactics

superintendent with the 607th Air Control Squadron at Luke Air Force

Base, Phoenix, Ariz. He is the son of Connie J. Terry of Huntington Beach

and Paul A. Zaferis of Lancaster. . . . Four Huntington Beach residents

were named to the Fall 2001 dean’s list at Boston University. The

students are Michelle L. Butman, Walton W. Chiu, Lauren D. Freeman and

Courtney J. McClellan. . . . Three Marina High School juniors were named

Americanism Essay Contest winners in an event held by the Orange County

Branch 175 Fleet Reserve Assn. The theme of the essay contest was “What

Memorial Day Means to Me.” The event was open to all students in Orange

County in grades seven through 12. The winning students were Martha

Gardikas, third place, Stuart Strother, second place, and Casey Harelson,

first place. The three winners received U.S. Savings Bonds. Harelson’s

first place essay was selected as the overall winner at the Branch level

and took first place at the Southwest Regional level. His essay has been

forwarded to the FRA National Headquarters for further competition with

the results expected in May.
