College baseball: UCI goes 2-1 at UOP
STOCKTON - The UC Irvine baseball team closed out its three-game
series against host University of the Pacific with a 4-2 loss Saturday,
which came after two straight wins to open Big West Conference Play.
The Pacific Tigers (16-11-1, 1-2 in conference) broke away from a 2-2
tie with two runs in the sixth and then held on for the win.
Jaime Martinez and Steve Guthrie led UCI (19-14, 2-1), as each
finished 2 for 4. Martinez slammed a solo home run in the top of the
fourth to put the Anteaters up, 2-1.
B.J. Eucce scored on a passed ball to give UCI a 1-0 lead. UCI center
fielder Jon Horwitz collected a single to extend his hitting streak to 11
games. He also had a hit, and an RBI, in the 9-5 UCI win Friday.
The Anteaters, who have won 11 out of their last 16, answered a 3-1
deficit with a four-run third inning, grabbing momentum and holding on
for the win. Martinez, Guthrie, Eucce and Efren Trejo contributed two
hits each. Guthrie earned three RBIs, while Horwitz, Trejo, Eucce, Chris
Klemm and Jordan Szabo added one each.
UCI pitcher Glenn Swanson (6-1) earned his sixth win, completing four
scoreless and hitless innings.
The Anteaters return to action with a nonconference game Tuesday at 5
p.m. at USC, where UCI Coach John Savage worked as pitching coach before
becoming an Anteater.
