Newport Harbor Baseball Association: Dodgers come out on top
R.J. D’Cruz singled in the top of the fifth inning with the bases
loaded to help the Dodgers defeat the Red Sox, 7-6, in Newport Harbor
Baseball Association Bronco Division action.
D’Cruz’s hit gave the Dodgers a 7-4 advantage. The Red Sox threatened
with the tying run at third and winning run on second, but catcher John
Swift controlled a Dodger wild pitch and tossed the ball to D’Cruz, who
tagged the runner out at the plate to end the inning.
Swift started the game and pitched three strong innings, allowing no
earned runs and striking out seven. Spenser Vengas pitched one inning and
D’Cruz finished the game, pitching three innings and allowing one earned
run with eight strikeouts.
The defense was led by Danny Moskovits, Garrett Morgan, Travis
Knalson, Matthew Waller and Holden Gray-Keough. Peter Kinney led the
offense with a single, double and run scored. Trevor Davis had a hit and
run scored, Brandon Davis doubled and scored two runs and Christian
Hoagland singled and scored a run for the Dodgers.
The Red Sox received strong pitching from Garrett Gordon, Scott Ward
and Adrian Rodriguez. Coby Peterson had two hits and Rodriguez and Max
Royer each added a hit. The defensive play of Vince Newsome anchored the
team.
In Bronco Division action:
* Reds 3, Cubs 1 - Pitchers Nick Svendsen and Troy Seeber struck out
nine and gave up two hits in seven innings for the Reds. Stefan Brysha,
Svendsen, Ronnie Dunmore and Jeff Frum led the offensive attack.
Svendsen, Seeber and Spencer Richley were solid on defense. Playing well
for the Cubs were Austin Carden and pitcher Michael Helfrich.
In Pony Division action:
* Mud Hens 6, Bulls 4 - Pitchers Brendon Salisbury, Nick Frazier and
Nathan Cramer scattered six hits and struck out 12 batters. The Mud Hens
were led on offense by Nick Frazier (3 for 3, one double, two runs
scored). Salisbury hit a home run and Cramer scored a run and doubled.
Andrew Skjonsby and Kory Kough also had key hits. Jose Gutierrez scored
after reaching base on a fielder’s choice.
* Mud Hens 9, Red Sox 4 - Pitchers Salisbury, Frazier and Cramer gave
up four hits and struck out 14. Frazier and Cramer each went 2 for 3 with
a walk. Frazier had two doubles and Cramer had one double and a hit. Will
Klatte, Salisbury, Gutierrez, Skjonsby and Brice Stillman chipped in with
key hits. Kough reached base three times and scored a run.
In Shetland Division action:
* The Cardinals and Reds battled to a tie in recent action. Joey
Gregory played well offensively. Nick Shellahamer was solid at first base
and Zach Buccelu controlled second. Dylan Bentley contributed in the
middle of the lineup and Alec Farrase played well.
