Looking back, 5 years ago this week.

The Estancia High boys basketball team opens the CIF Southern Section

Division III-A playoffs with a 53-45 win over host La Quinta. Estancia

uses its trio of Selwyn Mansell, James Dawkins and Sam Nelson to earn the

victory. Mansell scores 20 points, including four three-pointers, while

Dawkins adds 16 points and two three-pointers. Nelson contributes 14

points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

The Newport Harbor boys soccer team dominates Valencia and wins, 2-0,

in the first round of the CIF Division III playoffs at Kaiser Elementary

School. Chris Wakim returns after missing two weeks and three league

contests with a groin injury. Wakim scores a goal that secures the win,

while Garrett Jansma boots one in for a 1-0 lead. Goalkeeper Zach Wells

records three saves.

The Estancia boys soccer team receives a lift from Fernando Lara and

Miguel Zelaya to defeat Fullerton, 3-2, in the first round of the CIF

Division IV playoffs. Zelaya dishes out three assists. Jose Quintana,

known to his teammates as, “Pele,” scores two goals, while Ramon Garcia

adds one.

The Newport Harbor girls basketball team cruises past visiting

Valencia, 71-36, in the first round of the CIF Division III-A playoffs.

Breanna Badorek (20 points), Colleen Eadie (19), M.E. Clayton (12) and

April Ross (10) score in double figures. Clayton grabs 11 rebounds.

Looking back, 10 years ago this week.

The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team rallies behind Justin

McIntee to defeat host Sonora, 57-47, in the opening round of the CIF

Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs. McIntee is held to four points

on 2-of-8 shooting from the field in the first half, but he takes control

of the game during a decisive third quarter, hitting 6 of 7 field-goal

attempts. He adds 13 points in the fourth quarter to give him 25 in the

second half and 29 for the game. Mark McAnlis also helps out in the

winning effort, scoring 17 points.

The girls basketball teams from Newport Harbor and Estancia win their

respective playoff games to set up a meeting in the quarterfinals of CIF

Division III-AA, the following week. Coach Shannon Jakosky’s Sailors

defeat visiting Bellflower, 54-34, as Michaela Ross scores a game-high 22

points and Genevieve Evarts adds 10 points. Estancia wins, 52-23, over

visiting Centennial, but loses its leading scorer, Monique Sweet, to an

ankle injury in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Leah Braatz leads

the Eagles with a game-high 25 points.

The Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar boys soccer teams post

respective first-round playoff wins in CIF Division I-A. The Sailors

defeat host La Mirada, 2-1. Chad La Bass and Garon Eikerman score one

goal each. CdM builds a 5-0 lead and holds on for a 5-3 victory over

visiting Glenn. Tanner Rupp scores two goals, while Scott Owen, Jason

Boyce and Bill Rimmer ring up single tallies.
