College track and field: UCI athletes set records
UC Irvine collected several top performances in the Pomona College
Preseason meet that opened the 2002 outdoor schedule for the Anteaters
Saturday.
Cammy Carroll set a school record in winning the hammer throw with a
mark of 156-10, eclipsing the previous record by 18 feet. Carmen Schmidt,
the former record-holder, placed second at 140-11, lifting her No. 2
career mark at UCI. Carroll also won the discus at 144-5, the fifth-best
throw in UCI history, while Tynisia Edwards won the triple jump with a
mark of 38-4 1/4.
Erin Curtis won the pole vault at 11-6, while Tessa Cendejas and Jenny
Liou finished first and third in the 3,000 meters with times of 10:08.66
and 10:13.10, respectively. UCI went 2-3-4 in the mile run with Julie
Manson running 5:14.98, Kaleena Yee 5:16.13 and Lisa Massoth 5:18.73.
Suzanne Purmort was second in the 800 meters in 2:21.37.
For the Anteater men, Curtis Lehmann won the 800 meters in 1:56.98 and
Darrell Tozier captured the mile run in 4:26.29. David Santos was second
in the 3,000 meters in 8:54.09. Michael Beerer tossed the hammer 150-3
for the eighth-best mark in Anteater history.
Both Anteater teams compete in the Claremont College Relays Saturday.
