Two Costa Mesa students received scholarships from Cal State Long
Beach’s Women and Philanthropy program. Recreation and leisure studies
major Suzanne Hayes and nursing major Maria Wonder received scholarships
ranging from $500 to $1,500. The Women and Philanthropy program began to
help reentry students at the university and networking with other
graduates interested in participating in an academic setting. To date, 19
scholarships have been awarded through the program. . . . Donald Takaya
of Costa Mesa graduated from Trinity University with a bachelor’s degree
in sociology on Dec. 22 during the university’s winter commencement
ceremonies. Takaya was one of 86 undergraduate and graduate students
awarded degrees in December. Trinity University was founded in 1869 and
is a highly selective, professionally oriented liberal arts and science
institution. . . . Costa Mesa and Newport Beach students were selected
for the dean’s honor list for the 2001 fall quarter at UC Santa Barbara.
Costa Mesa students and their majors are Dana Helen Cassity
(communication sociology), Bryan David Howard (history), Benjamin William
Ritter (art studio), Nathaniel Hollis Bays Thaler (pre-psychology) and
Sara Marie White (theater). Newport Beach students and their majors are
Justin David Mathena (pre-computer science) and Autumn Rose Smith
(bio-psychology). All students listed are undergraduates and attained a
grade-point average of 3.75 taking 12 or more units in the College of
Letters and Science or a 3.50 in the College of Engineering. . . . Janet
Caprario has joined Newport Beach-based JBZ Architecture and Planning as
the company’s director of finance. Caprario will be responsible for the
firm’s financial and cash management activities, including accounts
payable, accounts receivable, and payroll and cash flow systems. She will
also oversee the firm’s human resources and contract administration
departments and supervise the accounting and administrative staff.
Caprario brings more than 15 years of experience in finance and
administrative management to JBZ. She is a longtime member of PEO, a
nonprofit philanthropic organization dedicated to advancing educational
opportunities for women, serving as its president from 1995 to 1997.
Caprario is also the news editor and contributing writer for the Society
of Design Administration’s national publication Behind the Design.
