College Baseball: Lions split

The Vanguard University baseball team opened the season with an 8-6

loss to visiting Cal State Los Angeles but rebounded with a 4-1 victory

over the Golden Eagles in a nonconference doubleheader Monday.

In the second game, sophomore Marcus Harris pitched a complete-game

three-hitter and the Lions came on strong early.

Chad Chop drove in a run with a double and Andy Riddell followed with

a two-run single to give Vanguard a 3-0 lead.

The Lions (1-1) added an unearned run in the third inning and the

Golden Eagles could put only one run on the board in the fourth inning.

In the first game, the Lions fell behind, 3-0, but exploded for three

runs in the fourth inning to tie the score.

Curt Garner doubled to drive in two runs. Jason Searle also doubled in

a run.

Vanguard took a 5-3 lead in the following inning with RBIs from Garner

and Chop.

The Lions scored another run in the seventh inning, but the Golden

Eagles put the game away with four runs in the eighth and one in the

ninth. Vanguard committed six errors in the game.
