Men’s basketball: Green leads UCI to tournament title
GREEN BAY, Wis. - Tournament most valuable player Jerry Green
scored a game-high 23 points to lead UC Irvine over Boston University,
77-71, in the championship game of the Oneida Classic at Brown Arena
Saturday night.
Green, who scored 16 points in the second half as the Anteaters
improved to 8-4 overall, moved into second place on UCI’s career scoring
list with 1,622 points, passing Dave Baker (1,602) Saturday. Tod Murphy
(1,778) is the school’s all-time leading scorer.
Sophomore forward Stanislav Zuzak and junior guard Mike Hood were
selected to the all-tournament team. Zuzak had 18 points, hitting 6 of 8
from the field and 3 of 4 on three-pointers. Hood scored 16 points,
converting 4 of 6 from three-point range.
UCI led, 34-27, at halftime and led by as many as 13 points at 62-49
with 10:55 left, but Boston (6-6) rallied to within 67-64 on a
three-point play by Ryan Butt with 6:13 remaining. Green then hit 6 of 7
free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
UCI shot 57% from the field, while the Terriers hit only 39%. Boston
hit its first 19 free throws and finished 22 of 24 from the line.
Billy Collins led the Terriers with 17 points, while Butt recorded 16
points and 11 rebounds. Paul Seymour added 14 points.
The Anteaters return to Big West Conference action Thursday, when they
host Cal State Fullerton at the Bren Events Center at 7:05 p.m.
