Boys basketball: Eagles blown out, 73-37
Steve Virgen
COSTA MESA - The Estancia High boys basketball team finished fourth
in its 17th annual Coast Classic after a 73-37 loss to Ocean View, which
used full-court pressure defense through three quarters and six minutes
into the fourth, Saturday.
Seahawks Coach Jim Harris said his team has had problems losing big
leads, so he thought it was important to maintain the intensity that
results from full-court pressure.
The Eagles (9-6) committed nine of their 20 turnovers in the first
quarter when Ocean View (8-7) built a 24-2 lead. Lewis Bradshaw scored
the only points of the quarter on a turnaround fade-away that he was
fouled on with 1:42 left.
Estancia senior Fernando Maldonado led the Eagles with 15 points,
hitting 3 of 5 from beyond the three-point line.
“When you lose to (Ocean View) it’s nothing to be ashamed of,” said
Coach Chris Sorce, whose Eagles will see more of the Seahawks in the
Golden West League next season. “Setting up the (Coast Classic) brackets,
I knew we would play at least two top-notch teams. It’s hard now, but I
know it will make us better in the long run.”
