Women’s basketball: Vanguard comes out on top in overtime

Senior center Kelly Boeke scored seven points in overtime to propel

the Vanguard women’s basketball team to a 70-64 victory over Northwestern

Oklahoma State in the Golden State Athletic Challenge at Azusa Pacific

University Saturday.

After taking an early 13-9 lead, the Lions played catch up for most of

the game. Vanguard (6-5) trailed by seven at halftime and Northwestern

Oklahoma State (10-2) increased its lead to 40-27 five minutes into the

second half.

The Lions went on a 13-4 run in five and a half minutes to come within

one point, 49-48, with seven minutes left in the game.

Deborah Candelaria hit a three-pointer with 38 seconds left to give

the Lions a 58-57 advantage.

Jessica Linderman made one of two free-throw attempts to increase

Vangaurd’s lead to 59-57 with 18 seconds left, but the Rangers’ Andrea

Shafer buried a 15-footer with two seconds left to send the game into

overtime.

The Lions, led by Boeke who piled up 15 points for the game, outscored

the Rangers, 11-5, in extra time. Also playing a major role on offense

was Candelaria, who scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight

rebounds.
