Girls soccer: Sailors win two
The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team knocked off two opponents
Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Excalibur Tournament at
Foothill High.
The Sailors shut out Buena, 1-0, in the second round and defeated Dana
Hills, 4-2, in a quarterfinal game.
Against Buena, Kate Younglove scored with an assist from Amy
Burlingham in the 14th minute of the second half. Goalkeeper Kara DeMille
made two saves to record her third straight shutout for the Sailors.
Newport Harbor outshot Buena, 7-2, although neither goalkeeper
registered a save in the first half.
Against Dana Hills, Burlingham scored on a breakaway four minutes into
the game to tie the score, 1-1.
The Dophins scored in the third minute of the second half, but, three
minutes later, Burlingham struck again on a breakaway to knot the score
at 2.
Newport Harbor took over from there with goals from Tory Manchester
and Amy Ross. Burlingham and Barbara Julian had assists.
Sailors’ Coach Jason Sorrell said his squad played well on defense,
with solid efforts from Kristin Nahin, Taryn Flamson, Erin Hardy and
Lauren Birchfield.
DeMille made two saves for the Sailors (4-4-1), who face Marina in a
semifinal today at 9:30 a.m. at Foothill High.
