Youth Soccer: CdM finishes fifth
The Corona del Mar AYSO Plus under-12 boys soccer team battled to a
2-2 tie with Newport Beach to share fifth place in the playoff
tournament.
After a tough loss against undefeated Mission Viejo, Corona del Mar
matched up against Newport Beach and received goals from Scott Thomsen
and Andy Rovzar. Parker Rhodes, Taylor Stone and Rovzar tallied assists.
Also contributing on offense were Nick Freeman, Morgan Brombal, Michael
Bear and Thomas Dialynas.
Goalkeeper Andy Morrow made a diving save on the goal line in the fourth
quarter to preserve the tie. The Corona del Mar defense was anchored by
J.P. Gormly, Riley Sullivan, Taylor Stone, Kevin Kottke and Michael Page.
Corona del Mar defeated Irvine North, 1-0, in the first round and beat
Costa Mesa, 3-0, in the second round.
Against Irvine North, Dialynas scored on a penalty kick in the third
quarter. Corona del Mar controlled the midfield with solid efforts from
Freeman, Rhodes, Brombal and Bear.
Against Costa Mesa, Rhodes, Rovzar and Brombal scored goals while Freeman
and Rovzar had assists.
Thomsen and Bear supported the CdM offense. Morrow posted his second
shutout of the tournament.
