Alzheimer’s Assn. of Orange County

Support group leaders, Visiting Volunteers, family resource

American Cancer Society Road to Recovery

The transportation program needs volunteers to drive cancer patients

to and from medical treatments free of charge. The required commitment is

a few hours each week or month. Drivers must have a valid driver’s

American Home Health Hospice Program

The American Home Health Hospice Program needs volunteers to give

emotional support to terminally ill patients and their families in the

Animal Network of Orange County

Become a bottle-feeder or take in pregnant cats at your home. Many

shelters kill pregnant cats upon arrival. Dogs and cats are also

Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport-Mesa

The three area clubs need volunteer coaches and arts and crafts

The Orange County chapter of the national Multiple Sclerosis Society

has started a new self-help group in Costa Mesa for people newly

diagnosed or with minimal symptoms of multiple sclerosis, or both. The

Costa Mesa Senior Corp.

The nonprofit organization at the Costa Mesa Senior Center is looking

for new board members. The fund-raising and policymaking board needs

volunteers who will participate in monthly meetings, occasional committee

Master Chorale of Orange County

Mentor Program

YMCA Community Services needs mentors to make a lasting effect on a

young person’s life. Students from 10 to 18 years old are matched with

mentors to improve their school performance and self-esteem while

Newport Beach Recital Series

The Friends of The Newport Beach Recital Series Guild needs volunteers

to assist in fostering music appreciation so classical music will endure.

Newport Theatre Arts Center

A variety of jobs need to be tackled, including set construction,

ushering, mailings and assorted technical duties. Scheduling is flexible,

with a two- to 20-hour commitment per month. The Newport Theatre Arts

Oasis Senior Center

Meals on Wheels volunteers are needed to distribute prepared dishes to

homebound seniors in the Newport Beach area. The delivery time is between

11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily. The Oasis Senior Center also needs volunteer

nurses for its bimonthly blood pressure screenings. The center offers

this service between 9 and 11 a.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of the

month. Volunteers should commit two hours once a month or volunteer on a

Operation Clean Slate, a Costa Mesa-based organization that focuses on

OCC Nautical Library

Orange Coast College’s School of Sailing and Seamanship needs book

donations for its Nautical Library. Thousands of volumes of

Orange Coast Interfaith Shelter

The largest family shelter in the county needs volunteers for its

children’s programs. It especially desires tutors and those who can take

Orange County Child Abuse Prevention Center

The center needs volunteers to work with high-risk families and

children, providing weekly emotional support to families, infants and

Orange County Homeless Task Force

The task force is recruiting volunteers for the Interfaith Council

Network to work one on one with homeless adults in a program on basic

Learn more about art and share with your community by becoming a

docent at the Orange County Museum of Art. A docent is a volunteer who

guides adults and school groups through the galleries and teaches about

Participate in life management and employment training workshops as a

Organization for the Humane Care of Animals

Volunteers are needed to care for stray and lost animals in the

Orton Dyslexia Society Orange County Branch

Volunteers are needed to teach reading skills, work on mailings and

Pacific Symphony Orchestra

The Orange County Pacific Symphony Orchestra’s Volunteers in Education

Opportunities program needs volunteers to assist children in a variety of

Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation

PCRF raises money to support the pediatric cancer research laboratory

Prime Dynamics

Prime Dynamics, a Newport Beach nonprofit organization for the 99 and

Project Cuddle

Project Cuddle, a nonprofit organization, serves the needs of abused,

abandoned and drug-exposed children. In addition to office help and

once-a-month, 12-hour hotline shifts, volunteers are needed for an

auxiliary group, fund-raising committees and to help distribute stickers

to stop babies from being abandoned in trash bins. The organization also

Project Together

Project Together seeks adult volunteers to establish a trusting,

one-to-one relationship with children stressed from family problems and

abuse. This component of the Orange County Health Care Agency’s

Children’s Mental Health Services offers training and supervision for the

program. Many of the children are economically deprived and victims of

Reach Out for Seniors

Volunteers are needed to provide companionship and friendship to

isolated seniors in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. Training and support

are offered, and volunteers must be 18 or older. (949) 442-1000.

Reading By 9

The mentor reading program seeks volunteers to read to students in

kindergarten through third grade. In Costa Mesa, Pomona Elementary

School, (949) 515-6980; Whittier Elementary School, (949) 515-6898;

Wilson Elementary School, (949) 515-6995; and New Shalimar Learning

Center, (949) 646-0396, need help in assisting students in reading,

writing and English. Mentor sessions may be scheduled from 8:30 to 11:30

a.m. and after school, from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Save Our Youth

The Westside Costa Mesa youth organization is looking for volunteers

to help create a positive alternative for people 12 to 23 years old.

Volunteers are needed to help in areas such as boxing, sports, health,

The Senior Corps of Retired Executives of Orange County is seeking

volunteers to help small businesses in counseling and workshops. (714)

Serving People In Need

Serve as a guide for homeless families by helping them set goals and

Senior Meals and Services Inc.

Volunteers are needed to deliver meals to homebound senior citizens

residing in Costa Mesa who are not able to prepare their own meals and do

not have anyone to prepare meals for them. A hot lunch is delivered

Monday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to the senior’s home. A

one-day-a-week commitment is all that is asked. Substitute drivers are

Serving People in Need

Serving People in Need, also know as SPIN, is looking for volunteers

to help prepare sack meals for the homeless, assemble hygiene kits,

distribute meals and pick up food for preparation. SPIN provides move-in

costs for housing, case management and support services to families

leaving shelters. SPIN also serves as family advisors or mentors and

Sexual Assault Victim Services of Orange County

Volunteers are needed to provide assistance on the crisis hotline and

at the hospital. There is a special need for bilingual and bicultural

SHARE! High School Exchange Program

Host families are needed in the Costa Mesa area to provide a bed,

meals and a loving home for high school students from more than 28

countries, including Germany, Japan, Brazil, China and Poland. The

students, all between 15 and 18, participate in cross-cultural exchange

to learn about America and share their own culture. The students stay for

five to 10 months and are screened twice for academic excellence and

Share Our Selves Christmas Program

Share Our Selves is seeking families, business groups, fraternal and

social groups to “adopt a family” during the holiday season. Donations

may be brought from 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 22 to the Orange County

Fairgrounds, 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa. Volunteers are also needed

throughout the day to deliver food and gifts to the families. (949)

Share Our Selves Clinic

The clinic, which provides emergency services to the needy in Orange

County, is looking for volunteers to deliver and pick up food from local

restaurants and grocery stores, help with medical and dental staff, data

entry, assist with food sorting and distribution, to help at the front

Sherman Library & Gardens

You could assist with the garden, work in the gift and tea shop or

Someone Cares Soup Kitchen needs food servers and volunteers for

South Coast Literacy Council

Volunteer tutors are needed for an increased demand of literacy and

English as a Second Language classes. Students are taught English

reading, writing and speaking skills at their own level in small groups

or on a one-to-one basis. There are centers all over Orange County. Once

The South Coast Repertory Theater needs volunteers to help with

Tell-a-Friend

Orange County cancer groups seek volunteers to educate and encourage

women to have mammograms. Participants will take part in a one-on-one

program of education and encouragement specifically related to mammograms

Visions for Prisons, a nonprofit program that teaches attitudinal
